Motorcycle braking is a balance between two independently loaded contact patches. Hardware, tyre grip, road surface and rider input all matter, while ABS and CBS perform different supporting jobs.

Why motorcycles use front and rear brakes

Braking transfers load toward the front tyre, so the front brake usually has more available grip during firm deceleration. The rear still matters for stability, low-speed control and balancing the machine. The ideal split changes with surface, speed, load and motorcycle geometry.

What ABS actually does

Anti-lock braking monitors wheel-speed behaviour and modulates brake pressure when a wheel approaches lock. Its purpose is to preserve wheel rotation and stability during braking; it does not create unlimited grip, shorten every stop or make corner entry risk-free.

Single-channel ABS acts on one wheel, commonly the front. Dual-channel systems manage both. Cornering or IMU-supported ABS can consider vehicle motion, but the exact capability and selectable off-road behaviour must be checked for the named model.

CBS is not the same as ABS

An emergency is the wrong time to discover lever reach, pedal position or how strongly a particular motorcycle transfers weight. Tyres, load and maintenance

Correct cold pressure, tread condition, tyre age and rated load influence the grip available to any brake system. Brake fluid, pads, discs, hoses and controls also need scheduled inspection. Warning lamps require the handbook's interpretation: a lamp during the startup self-check can be normal, while a lamp that remains illuminated may indicate a fault. Identify each control, inspect visible hardware and ask the seller to name the fitted system for the exact derivative.
